Most of you might not know that my sister , Jen (only one year older than me) was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall of 2022 and underwent a bilateral mastectomy in December of 2022, reconstructive surgery in May of 2023 and then had hysterectomy this past November. She is the reason our family learned of our BRCA-1 genetic mutation -- and all the not so fun stuff that goes along with it . She is cancer free but has to take some (nasty) medication for the next five years as part of her treatment plan.
Taking on a half marathon when you've had 3 surgeries in a year and are fighting with side effects of medication that include fatigue and joint pain is no small feat. She showed up to the start line completely doubting she could run the race as some injuries had surfaced toward the latter end of training . Kayla and I were determined to get her confidently across the finish line . We opted for a run-walk plan for the entire race (7 minutes of running + 1 minute of walking ). It was hard for her but she did it and we had a blast ! She told me she would not have finished if we hadn't stuck with her and pushed her !!
So it was an emotional experience for everyone and a great send off for me as I approach my third surgery in a year (thanks, BRCA ) but hey - no cancer so.)"
